In 1988, through the efforts of long-time member Jan Bernstein, the Colorado Women's Bar Association established a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable corporation.
The corporation was named "The Jennifer Robbins Fund" in memory of a lawyer who was an activist against poverty, devoted considerable energy to mental health programs, and fought for equal civil rights for women and minorities. Her untimely death in 1987 from cancer motivated those who loved her to perpetuate her name and her goals. Thus, the Foundation began.
The Foundation's purpose is to implement the charitable and educational work of the CWBA, that is, to promote the advancement of women in the law, and to protect and promote the welfare of all women.
The Foundation spearheaded fundraising efforts for the ground breaking 1998 report "Gender Penalties: The Results of the Careers and Compensation Study". This report, often referred to as the "Careers and Compensation Study", was a follow-up to the landmark 1993 Economic Study which first documented the economic disparity between male and female attorneys in Colorado.
