Our 2018 Convention theme is WONDER WOMEN!, in recognition of all the big and small ways women lawyers are superheroes—to their clients and to their communities. Our speakers promise to not only share insights on hot legal topics but also those focused on social justice.

Here are a few of our confirmed speakers and topics:

"The Power of Corporate Diversity and Inclusion Programs" Luncheon Keynote Speaker

Maria Arias - Maria G. Arias is the CEO of Arias Ventures, LLC, a consulting firm specializing in diversity and inclusion, multicultural initiatives, government affairs, and leadership development.

Maria recently was the first Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion for Comcast Corporation. In this role, she established the Corporate Diversity & Inclusion department which oversaw diversity and inclusion related initiatives across Comcast Corporation, including Comcast Cable, NBCUniversal, Telemundo, and Comcast Spectacor. Before joining Comcast in 2007, Maria had leadership roles in law and government affairs at AT&T Corporation, AT&T Broadband, and Adelphia Communications. Earlier in her career, Maria was a partner with McDermott, Will & Emery, in Chicago, IL, specializing in litigation.

Maria will be interviewed by:

Laressa Watlington - Laressa Watlington is the founder, executive producer, and digital strategist at Denver Promo Studios. She has extensive experience in print, broadcast, and online media. In her previous position as a digital journalist for NBC Universal/Telemundo, Laressa received multiple awards, including an Award of Excellence from the Colorado Broadcasters Association (CBA) for Best Station Website in Spanish. She has won three Editor & Publisher awards and an Emmy for her videography in the documentary "Final Edition." In 2014 she received an Award of Excellence from the CBA for the documentary "The Cliff Effect," which she produced in conjunction with Rocky Mountain PBS and the I-News Investigative Network. Laressa is an innovator in the bilingual media market and has worked to create digital and video products that promote diversity and understanding.

Paulette Brown - Paulette was the third African American ABA president and the first female African American ABA president, and she will speak on the importance of having (and being) champions throughout your career.

Distinguished Guest Plenary Address:
"Using Your Power: Incorporating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion into Everyday Life"

Dr. Nita Mosby Tyler – Dr. Mosby Tyler is the Chief Catalyst and Founder of The Equity Project, LLC, an organization designed to support organizations and communities in building diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies. She will speak about how women and other underrepresented groups can work together to combat implicit and explicit bias in the workplace, the importance of being a good ally (and what being an ally really means), and how to avoid succumbing to “diversity fatigue.”

The CWBA's prestigious Mary Lathrop Award will presented during
the Convention during a reception at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 18, 2018. This year's honoree is CWBA Past President and Denver District Attorney Beth McCann. Read about the history of the award, and see a list of previous recipients here.
